Since its inception in 1775, The United States
Marine Corps has served in every American armed
conflict including the Revolutionary War. Based
on the iconic photograph taken of Marines raising
the Stars and Stripes on the island of Iwo Jima in
1945, the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial honors
the sacrifice of all Marines who gave their lives in
defense of the United States.
