Over three million visitors a year come from around
the country and the world to pay homage to Abraham
Lincoln, "The Great Emancipator." The building is in
the form of a Greek Doric temple, with 36 columns
surrounding the building, representing the 36 states
in the re-formed Union at the time of Lincoln's death.
Dedicated in 1922 as a symbol of our country's
gratitude to Lincoln, the monument has always been
a place where demonstrations for social change
have taken place. One of the most famous was the
August 1963 March on Washington, where the
Reverend Martin Luther King gave his renowned
"I Have a Dream" speech.
